You know those people you read about who are neck-deep in credit-card debt? I was one of them today. I could call each of them my brother or my sister.

I got an e-mail yesterday from Citi Cards about my Visa credit card:

Your Citibank statement is now available at

To my horror, I found myself floundering in $78.02 of credit card debt.

The panic set in immediately.  How could I possibly pay the loansharks for my splurges at the Marathon and Citgo gas stations?  Would they ever understand that I hadn’t meant to use my personal credit card for that Shell station in Birmingham, Alabama?

There is a happy ending to this story.  I clicked the “Pay Now” button and, in a single stroke, erased my debt.  The feeling of oppression lifted from my shoulders.  I am a new man.

O the joy!
